And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They confronted King Uzziah and said to him, 'It's not your place, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD. Only the priests who are descendants of Aaron are set apart for this sacred duty. Leave the sanctuary immediately, because you have overstepped your boundaries. This will not bring you honor from the LORD God.'
The priests boldly confronted King Uzziah, telling him he had no right to perform their sacred duties and that his actions dishonored God.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of ancient Judah, King Uzziah was a successful ruler who expanded his kingdom through military victories, but his growing pride led him to overstep his authority by attempting to burn incense in the temple. According to the books of Chronicles, this act violated God's established order, as only the priests descended from Aaron were consecrated for such sacred duties in the tabernacle or temple. The priests confronted Uzziah to uphold the boundaries set in the Mosaic Law, emphasizing the importance of distinct roles in Israel's worship.
