And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Achish replied to David, 'I know that you are good in my eyes, like an angel of God. But the Philistine commanders have said that you cannot come with us into battle.'
The writer is showing how even though King Achish trusted David completely, the other Philistine leaders refused to let David fight alongside them against Israel.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative, David had fled from King Saul and was living as a refugee among the Philistines, serving King Achish of Gath to avoid persecution. Achish held David in high esteem, viewing him as trustworthy and even comparing him to an angel of God, but the other Philistine leaders distrusted him due to his Israelite background. As a result, they overruled Achish and prevented David from joining their forces in the upcoming battle against Israel.
