Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.
This is bad news for everyone living along the coast, you Philistines and all the people in that region. God has spoken against you, and it's serious. He's saying he'll completely wipe out your land until no one's left there.
When God sets boundaries, crossing them has real consequences.
📚 Historical Context
Zephaniah was a prophet in Judah during the reign of King Josiah in the 7th century BC, a time when the nation faced threats from neighboring enemies. The Philistines, a seafaring people living along the Mediterranean coast in the land of Canaan, had a history of conflict with Israel, including raids and idolatry that provoked God's judgment. This verse is part of Zephaniah's broader oracle of doom against various nations, warning of complete destruction for their unrepentant sins.
