For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me.
For they are completely given to me from among the people of Israel. Instead of taking the firstborn child from every family, the first child born to each mother, I have taken the Levites for myself.
God is explaining that He chose the entire tribe of Levites to serve Him in place of claiming the firstborn son from every Israelite family.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Numbers, which records the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt, God designated the Levites as a special tribe to serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. This was in exchange for the firstborn sons of Israel, whom God had claimed for Himself during the Passover plague in Egypt when He spared them from death. As a result, the Levites were wholly dedicated to God's service, replacing the obligation of every firstborn to perform sacred duties.
