And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe in me or honor me as holy in front of the Israelites, you will not be allowed to lead this group of people into the land I have promised to give them.'
God is telling Moses and Aaron that because they failed to trust Him and honor Him publicly, they won't be allowed to enter the Promised Land with the Israelites.
📚 Historical Context
This judgment came after Moses struck the rock twice to bring forth water instead of simply speaking to it as God commanded, showing doubt and anger rather than faith. This incident occurred during Israel's 40-year wilderness journey, near the end when they were approaching the Promised Land. Moses and Aaron, despite their faithful leadership, were held to a high standard as God's representatives before the people.
