But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
So when the workers who started early came to get paid, they figured they'd definitely get more than everyone else. But nope, they got the exact same amount as everyone else.
Sometimes fairness doesn't look like what we expected, but it's still fairness.
📚 Historical Context
In the first-century Jewish context, day laborers were often hired in the marketplace early in the morning for a full day's work and expected a standard wage, such as a denarius. Jesus told this parable as part of his teachings on the kingdom of heaven, responding to the disciples' concerns about rewards for their sacrifices, to illustrate that God's grace doesn't operate on human standards of fairness. It highlights the tension between earthly expectations and divine generosity in a society where agricultural work was central to daily life.
