Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
But he doesn't have deep roots in himself, so he only lasts for a little while. When trouble or hate comes his way because of God's message, he gets offended and walks away pretty quickly.
Without deep roots, you'll bail when things get hard.
📚 Historical Context
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower to illustrate how different people respond to the Word of God, using everyday agricultural imagery familiar to his audience in first-century Judea. This specific verse describes the seed that falls on rocky ground, symbolizing a person who initially accepts the message with enthusiasm but lacks a deep foundation. During Jesus' ministry, his followers often faced persecution from religious leaders and Roman authorities, making this warning particularly relevant to their experiences.
