Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
So Jesus told them, 'Look, there's so much work to be done out there, like a massive harvest waiting to be gathered, but there just aren't enough people willing to do it. So ask God to send more workers into the field.'
There's tons of work to do for God's kingdom, but we need more people stepping up to help.
📚 Historical Context
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is speaking to a group of seventy-two disciples whom he is sending out on a mission to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick across various towns in first-century Israel. He uses the harvest metaphor to describe the plentiful opportunities for spiritual growth among the people, but emphasizes the shortage of workers due to the challenges of that era, such as opposition from religious leaders and the vastness of the region. This reflects the cultural context of an agrarian society where harvests symbolized abundance and urgency, urging immediate action in spreading God's message.
