And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.
Then he will go out to the altar that stands before the LORD and make atonement for it. He will take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on the horns of the altar all around.
The high priest is purifying the altar by applying the blood from the sacrificed animals to make it clean and holy before God.
📚 Historical Context
In the Old Testament, the book of Leviticus was given to Moses as a guide for the Israelites' religious practices and maintaining purity before God, particularly in the context of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. Chapter 16 details the Day of Atonement, an annual ritual where the high priest atoned for the sins of the entire nation by entering the Holy of Holies and performing sacrifices. In this specific verse, the high priest applies blood from the sacrificed bull and goat to the altar to symbolically cleanse it from the defilement caused by the people's sins, underscoring God's demand for holiness and separation from impurity.
