📚 Historical Context
In the book of Judges, Abimelech had just killed most of his brothers to claim kingship over Shechem, leaving Jotham as one of the few survivors who escaped. Jotham then climbed Mount Gerizim, a significant site in Israelite tradition often associated with blessings and proclamations, to publicly address the people of Shechem with a warning parable. This event reflects the turbulent period of the judges in Israel, where cycles of leadership, rebellion, and divine judgment played out in the nation's history.
