Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
Then the five men left and went to Laish, where they saw how the people lived there. They lived carelessly, like the people of Sidon, peaceful and secure. There was no ruler in the land who might restrain them in anything, and they were far away from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone else.
The five scouts found a prosperous, peaceful city called Laish that was completely defenseless and isolated, making it an easy target for conquest.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Judges, the tribe of Dan was struggling to secure their allotted territory in the Promised Land, so they sent five spies to scout for new areas. These spies arrived at Laish, a prosperous and isolated city whose inhabitants lived in peaceful security without any strong leadership or alliances, much like the Sidonians, making them vulnerable to attack. This event occurred during a turbulent period in Israel's history when there was no central king, leading to widespread disorder and opportunistic conflicts.
