Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish spoke to their fellow tribesmen and said, 'Do you know that in these houses there is a sacred vest, household gods, a carved idol, and a metal idol? Now think about what you should do.'
The five scouts are telling their tribe about the religious objects they discovered, hinting that they should take them.
📚 Historical Context
In the era of the Judges, Israel was a collection of tribes without a king, leading to widespread moral decline and frequent acts of idolatry as people turned away from God's laws. The tribe of Dan, who had not fully secured their allotted territory, sent spies to scout the peaceful city of Laish, where they encountered idolatrous objects in the home of a man named Micah. This incident reflects the broader cultural unfaithfulness in Israel, where individuals created their own religious practices instead of following the covenant with God.
