And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The people of Benjamin did not force out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem. So the Jebusites continued to live alongside the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem even up to the time this was written.
This verse explains that the tribe of Benjamin failed to completely remove the Jebusites from Jerusalem, so both groups ended up living together in the same city.
📚 Historical Context
After the Israelites conquered much of the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership, God commanded each tribe to fully drive out the Canaanite inhabitants from their assigned territories to avoid future idolatry and conflict. The tribe of Benjamin failed to expel the Jebusites from Jerusalem, allowing them to coexist with the Israelites, which reflected a pattern of incomplete obedience seen throughout the Book of Judges. This situation highlighted the consequences of not fully following God's directives, as it led to ongoing tensions in the land.
