And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
And this is what will happen: as soon as the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, who is the Lord of all the earth, step into the Jordan River, the water will stop flowing from upstream and pile up like a wall.
God is promising that when the priests step into the Jordan River while carrying His sacred ark, He will miraculously stop the flowing water so the people can cross on dry ground.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Joshua, the Israelites, led by Joshua after the death of Moses, were on the verge of entering the Promised Land after their 40 years of wandering in the desert. The Jordan River posed a formidable natural barrier during the harvest season when it was flooded, and God instructed the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant ahead as a sign of His presence and power. This event was a miraculous demonstration of God's faithfulness, similar to the parting of the Red Sea, to enable the nation to cross into Canaan.
