Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.
So you must survey the land and divide it into seven sections, then bring me a written description of each part. I will then draw lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our God.
Joshua is instructing the remaining tribes to map out the unconquered land so he can fairly distribute it among them by drawing lots before God.
📚 Historical Context
In the Book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered much of the Promised Land, seven tribes had not yet received their allotted territories, as the division of the land was an ongoing process under God's direction. Joshua instructed these tribes to survey the remaining land and describe it in seven parts, so that lots could be cast to fairly assign the portions before the Lord. This method of casting lots highlighted the reliance on divine providence to ensure the land was distributed according to God's promises to the Israelites.
