Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.
The very thing you're running from, war and starvation, will catch up with you in Egypt. You think you're escaping to safety, but that's exactly where those fears will become reality, and that's where your story will end.
You can't outrun God's plan by running to the wrong place.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet is addressing a group of Judeans who had survived the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem around 586 BC and were contemplating fleeing to Egypt to escape further threats. They were terrified of the Babylonian army and the potential for famine, so they sought Jeremiah's guidance on whether to leave. God, through Jeremiah, warned them that disobeying His command to stay in the land would result in the very dangers they feared, war and famine, overtaking them in Egypt.
