And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
Gedaliah made a promise to them and their people, saying, 'Don't be scared to work with the Babylonians. Stay in the land, serve the king of Babylon, and things will go well for you.'
Sometimes working with the new reality, even when it's not what you wanted, is the path to peace.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, Judah had been conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC after the destruction of Jerusalem, leaving a remnant of people in the land under foreign rule. Gedaliah, appointed as governor by the Babylonians, was addressing local leaders and their followers, encouraging them to submit to Babylonian authority to avoid further harm and maintain their lives in Judah. This reassurance came during a time of instability and exile, as the Jewish people grappled with the loss of their independence.
