Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
This is what the Lord says: Anyone who stays in this city is going to die, whether from war, starvation, or disease. But if you surrender to the Babylonians, you'll make it out alive. You'll lose everything else, but you'll keep your life.
Sometimes survival means letting go of everything you thought you were protecting.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context, Jeremiah was a prophet speaking to the people of Judah during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem around 586 BC, a time when the nation had repeatedly disobeyed God and faced severe judgment through invading armies. This verse reflects the dire circumstances of the siege led by King Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldeans, where staying in the city meant facing death from war, starvation, and disease as divine consequences of their rebellion. Jeremiah's message urged surrender as a means of survival, emphasizing God's sovereignty over the outcome.
