Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
Then my promise to David my servant could also be broken, so that he would not have a descendant to rule as king on his throne; and my promise to the Levites, the priests who serve me, could also be broken.
God is saying that His promises to David's royal line and to the priestly family are as unbreakable as the laws of nature itself.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is part of God's response during Jerusalem's siege by Babylon, when the future of both the monarchy and priesthood seemed uncertain. God had made eternal covenants with David promising his descendants would always rule, and with the Levites promising they would always serve as priests. The people were questioning whether these promises could still be trusted in their desperate circumstances.
