And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.
The Babylonians who are fighting against this city will come and set it on fire. They will burn down the city along with all the houses where people have burned incense to Baal on their rooftops and poured out drink offerings to other gods, making me angry.
God is explaining that the Babylonians will destroy Jerusalem because the people have been worshiping false gods instead of Him, which has provoked His anger.
📚 Historical Context
In the 6th century BC, the prophet Jeremiah was delivering God's warnings to the people of Judah during a time of political turmoil, as the Babylonian Empire, often called the Chaldeans, was preparing to invade and destroy Jerusalem. The people had been practicing idolatry by offering incense and drink offerings to false gods like Baal on their rooftops, which was a common pagan ritual in ancient Near Eastern cultures and directly defied God's covenant with Israel. This verse reflects God's judgment on their unfaithfulness, foretelling the city's fiery destruction as a consequence of their sins.
