And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.
Work for the good and prosperity of the city where I have sent you as prisoners, and pray to the LORD for that city. When it does well, you will do well too.
God is telling His people to actively seek the welfare of the place where they live, even if they're there against their will, because their well-being is connected to their community's well-being.
📚 Historical Context
During the Babylonian exile in the 6th century BC, the Jewish people had been forcibly taken from Jerusalem to Babylon as captives after Nebuchadnezzar's conquest. In this verse from Jeremiah's letter, God instructs the exiles to actively seek the welfare and peace of the foreign city where they now lived, including praying for it, because their own stability and future restoration depended on the city's prosperity. This command reflected God's sovereign plan to preserve His people amid their displacement and eventual return.
