Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
Then the LORD said to me, 'The prophets are telling lies and claiming I sent them the message. But I never sent them, I never commanded them, and I never spoke to them. They are telling you false visions and fake predictions, worthless things that come from their own deceptive hearts.'
God is telling Jeremiah that the other prophets are lying about receiving messages from Him and are deceiving the people with false promises.
📚 Historical Context
In the 7th century BC, during a time of political instability in Judah as the Babylonian empire threatened invasion, the prophet Jeremiah was delivering God's warnings of judgment for the people's idolatry and unfaithfulness. False prophets were gaining popularity by offering comforting messages of peace and security, which contradicted Jeremiah's authentic prophecies and led the nation astray. God is speaking through Jeremiah in this verse to expose these deceivers and affirm that He had not authorized their words.
