The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
The Syrians will attack from the east, and the Philistines from the west; together they will completely destroy Israel like a wild animal devouring its prey. Even after all this punishment, God's anger will not be satisfied, and His hand will still be raised to strike again.
God is warning that Israel will face attacks from enemies on all sides as punishment for their disobedience, and His judgment isn't finished yet.
📚 Historical Context
During the 8th century BC, the prophet Isaiah delivered warnings to the Northern Kingdom of Israel about invasions from neighboring enemies like the Syrians and Philistines, which were seen as divine judgments for the nation's idolatry and moral failures. This verse is part of a broader prophetic oracle describing the Assyrian threat and the ongoing conflicts that left Israel vulnerable on multiple fronts. It underscores God's persistent discipline, indicating that His anger would not subside without true repentance.
