Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
Because this people has rejected the gentle waters of Shiloah, and instead they celebrate Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
God is pointing out that His people have rejected His gentle, peaceful provision and instead chosen to trust in foreign kings and military alliances.
📚 Historical Context
In the 8th century BC, during the reign of King Ahaz of Judah, the kingdom faced an imminent threat from a coalition of Syria, led by King Rezin, and Israel, led by Pekah son of Remaliah, who were plotting to invade and replace Ahaz with a puppet king. Isaiah used the waters of Shiloah, a gentle spring in Jerusalem symbolizing God's quiet and steady provision and protection for His people, to contrast with the people's misplaced trust in foreign alliances. This verse highlights the danger of rejecting God's subtle guidance in favor of human power, as the nation preferred the aggressive strategies of these enemy kings over divine assurance.
