I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
I will also choose to let them be deceived, and I will bring their worst fears on them. This is because when I called out to them, no one answered; when I spoke, they wouldn't listen. Instead, they did evil right in front of me and chose things that I hate.
God is saying that because people ignored His calls and chose to do evil, He will allow them to be deceived and face the consequences they fear most.
📚 Historical Context
In the historical context of Isaiah's prophecy, around the 8th century BC, the people of Judah were deeply involved in idolatry and repeatedly ignored God's commands, leading to warnings of divine judgment. Isaiah 66 specifically addresses God's response to their stubborn rebellion, where He promises to bring delusions and fears upon them as consequences for not answering His calls. This fits into the broader biblical narrative of prophets urging Israel to return to covenant loyalty amid threats of exile and restoration.
