The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
The strong defenses will be removed from Ephraim, and Damascus will no longer be a kingdom, and what's left of Syria will lose its power. They will be brought low just like the people of Israel were, says the LORD of armies.
God is saying that Syria and northern Israel will both lose their military strength and political power, suffering the same defeat that happened to the rest of Israel.
📚 Historical Context
In the 8th century BC, the prophet Isaiah was delivering warnings from God to the people of Judah about the judgments coming upon neighboring nations like Israel and Syria. Ephraim refers to the northern kingdom of Israel, which was often entangled in alliances and conflicts with powers like Assyria, while Damascus was the capital of Aram (ancient Syria), a frequent rival or ally in regional wars. This verse prophesies the downfall of their strongholds as a consequence of their unfaithfulness to God, illustrating His sovereignty over all nations.
