And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
The LORD will completely dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea, and with his powerful wind he will wave his hand over the great river. He will strike it and divide it into seven shallow streams, so that people can walk across on dry ground.
God is promising to remove the natural barriers that keep his people from returning home, just like he did when he parted the Red Sea for Moses.
📚 Historical Context
Isaiah wrote this during a time when God's people were scattered in exile, many in Babylon and Egypt. The 'Egyptian sea' likely refers to the Red Sea, and 'the river' to the Euphrates River - both major geographical barriers. Isaiah is prophesying about God gathering his scattered people from all nations and bringing them back to their homeland.
