They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
They won't be able to bring wine offerings to God anymore, and nothing they do will make him happy. Their sacrifices will be like food at a funeral, contaminated and meaningless. Everyone who takes part will be spiritually unclean, because their worship won't even make it to God's house.
When you're cut off from God, even your best efforts feel empty and don't reach him.
📚 Historical Context
Hosea was a prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century BC, speaking out against the people's widespread idolatry and unfaithfulness to God, which included worshiping false gods like Baal. In this verse, he warns that their ritual offerings would no longer be accepted by God due to their spiritual adultery, symbolizing the impending exile and the breakdown of their covenant relationship. This reflects a cultural context where religious practices had become empty and disconnected from true devotion.
