The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 11

Made Simple — Modern English Translation

Matthew 11:1-1

Transitional Statement

When Jesus finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he left that place and went to teach and preach in the towns throughout their region.

Matthew 11:2-6

John the Baptist's Question

While John the Baptist was in prison, he heard reports about the miraculous works that Christ was performing. This news prompted him to send some of his followers to Jesus with a crucial question. When John's disciples found Jesus, they asked him directly, "Are you the promised one we have been waiting for, or should we keep looking for someone else?" Jesus did not give them a simple yes or no answer. Instead, he told them, "Go back to John and tell him what you are hearing and seeing with your own eyes. Tell him that blind people are receiving their sight, and those who cannot walk are now walking. People with leprosy are being made clean and healthy. Those who were born deaf can now hear perfectly. Dead people are being brought back to life. And the good news of God's kingdom is being proclaimed to the poor." Then Jesus added these important words: "Blessed and fortunate is the person who does not stumble or lose faith because of me."

Matthew 11:7-15

Jesus' Testimony About John the Baptist

After John's disciples left, Jesus turned to the crowds and began talking about John. "What exactly did you go out to the wilderness to see?" he asked them. "Did you expect to find a weak reed bending with every gust of wind? No, that's not what drew you there. So what were you looking for? A man wearing expensive, fancy clothes? You won't find people dressed like that out in the desert — they live in royal palaces. "Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?" Jesus continued. "Yes, that's exactly right, but John is much more than just a prophet. He is the person the scriptures wrote about when they said, 'Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare the road before you arrive.' "I'm telling you the absolute truth — no human being who has ever lived is greater than John the Baptist. But here's something amazing: even the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John is. "Ever since John the Baptist began his work until right now, the kingdom of heaven has been under fierce attack, and violent people are trying to seize it by force. All the prophets and the Law of Moses pointed toward the future until John came. And if you're ready to accept this truth, John is the Elijah that was promised to come. "Anyone who has ears to hear should pay close attention to what I'm saying."

Matthew 11:16-19

Jesus Condemns This Generation

"What can I compare the people of this generation to?" Jesus asked. "They are like children sitting around in the town square, shouting complaints at each other. They call out, 'We played happy music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang sad funeral songs for you, but you wouldn't cry!' "When John the Baptist came, he fasted and didn't drink wine, and people said, 'He's possessed by a demon!' Then the Son of Man came, eating and drinking with people, and they say, 'Look at him! He's a glutton and a drunk who spends time with tax collectors and sinners!' "But wisdom proves itself right by what it accomplishes."

Matthew 11:20-24

Woe to the Unrepentant Cities

Then Jesus began to speak harsh words against the cities where he had performed most of his miraculous works, because the people in those cities had not turned away from their sins and changed their hearts. "How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! If the powerful miracles I did in your cities had been done instead in Tyre and Sidon, those people would have turned from their sins long ago. They would have put on rough clothes and sat in ashes to show how sorry they were for their wrongdoing. But I'm telling you the truth—on the day when God judges everyone, it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon to bear their punishment than it will be for you. "And you, Capernaum—do you think you will be honored and lifted up to heaven? No! You will be brought down to the place of the dead! If the miracles I performed in your city had been done in Sodom instead, that city would still be standing today. But I'm telling you—on the day of judgment, it will be easier for Sodom to bear its punishment than it will be for you."

Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus' Prayer of Thanksgiving and Invitation

At that moment, Jesus spoke these words: "Father, I thank You! You are the Lord who rules over heaven and earth. I praise You because You have kept these truths hidden from people who think they are wise and educated, but You have shown them clearly to those who have hearts like little children. Yes, Father, this is exactly what pleased You and brought You joy. My Father has placed everything under My care and authority. The Father is the only one who truly understands who I am as His Son. And I am the only one who truly knows the Father, along with anyone I choose to reveal Him to. All of you who are tired and carrying heavy loads, come to Me, and I will give you rest. Let Me teach you by taking on My yoke and learning My ways, because I am gentle and humble in My heart. When you do this, you will find the rest your souls are longing for. The yoke I give you is easy to bear, and the load I ask you to carry is light."
