And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
After Jared became the father of Enoch, he lived another eight hundred years and had other sons and daughters.
This verse tells us that Jared continued to live a very long life after having his son Enoch, and he had many more children during those centuries.
📚 Historical Context
This verse is part of the genealogy from Adam to Noah, recording the lifespans and family lines of the early patriarchs. In the ancient world, genealogies were crucial for establishing family identity, inheritance rights, and God's covenant promises passed down through generations. The extraordinarily long lifespans mentioned in Genesis 5 reflect the time period before the flood, when according to biblical narrative, human lifespans were much longer than they became later.
