📚 Historical Context
In the book of Genesis, Joseph had risen to a position of power in Egypt after being sold into slavery by his brothers, where he managed the country's resources during a widespread famine. Years later, his brothers returned to Egypt to buy more grain to survive the ongoing scarcity, bringing their youngest brother Benjamin as required. This interaction with the steward at the door reflects the brothers' caution and adherence to the formal customs of ancient Egyptian society when dealing with high officials.
