And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam he said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from, the ground is now cursed because of you. You will have to work hard and struggle to get food from it for the rest of your life.'
God is telling Adam that because he disobeyed and ate the forbidden fruit, farming and getting food from the earth will now be difficult and frustrating work for the rest of his life.
📚 Historical Context
In the Garden of Eden, God had created Adam and Eve as the first humans and placed them in a perfect world where they were to care for creation and obey His commands. When Adam chose to listen to Eve, who had been deceived by the serpent, and ate from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he directly disobeyed God's explicit instruction. As a result, God pronounced a curse on the ground, making human labor difficult and filled with hardship as part of the consequences of sin.
