Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.
So now, promise me here before God that you won't deceive me, my son, or my grandson. Instead, show the same kindness to me and to this land where you've been living as a foreigner that I have shown to you.
The writer is showing Abimelech asking Abraham to promise before God that he'll treat him and his descendants with the same fairness and kindness that Abimelech has shown Abraham.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Genesis, Abraham was living as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines under King Abimelek, following an earlier incident where Abraham had deceived Abimelek about his wife Sarah, which God resolved to prevent wrongdoing. This verse captures Abimelek approaching Abraham to secure a mutual oath of honesty and kindness, reflecting the common ancient practice of forming alliances through sworn agreements to maintain peace between nomadic groups and local rulers. Such oaths were culturally significant in the Near East for protecting relationships and ensuring fair treatment among tribes.
