For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
I know Abraham well enough to be sure that he will teach his children and his whole family to follow the Lord's ways, doing what is right and just. This way, the Lord can fulfill all the promises He has made to Abraham.
God is explaining that He chose Abraham because He knows Abraham will teach his family to live righteously, which will allow God to keep His promises to them.
📚 Historical Context
In the biblical narrative of Genesis, God is speaking to Abraham during a divine visit, where He reveals His plan to judge the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God expresses His trust in Abraham's faithfulness, knowing that Abraham will instruct his family and descendants to walk in God's ways by practicing justice and righteousness. This reflects the ancient patriarchal culture where family leaders were responsible for passing down moral and spiritual values to ensure covenant fidelity.
