Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people from the province who returned from captivity, those who had been taken away by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and carried off to Babylon. They came back to Jerusalem and Judah, each person returning to their own city.
This verse introduces a list of Jewish people who were finally able to return home to Jerusalem and their cities after being prisoners in Babylon for many years.
📚 Historical Context
In the 6th century BC, the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem and deported many Jews to Babylon, an event known as the Babylonian Captivity that marked the end of the Kingdom of Judah. This verse from Ezra begins a detailed list of the exiles' descendants who returned to Jerusalem and Judah after the Persian Empire, under King Cyrus, issued a decree allowing them to rebuild their temple and restore their communities. It reflects the broader biblical theme of God's providence in preserving and restoring His people amidst foreign domination.
