And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.
The LORD said to him, 'Go down the mountain, and then come back up with Aaron. But don't let the priests or the people force their way up to the LORD, or he will burst out against them in judgment.'
God is telling Moses to come back up Mount Sinai with Aaron, but to keep everyone else away because God's holy presence is dangerous to approach without permission.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had recently escaped from slavery in Egypt and arrived at Mount Sinai, where God was preparing to establish a covenant with them by giving the Ten Commandments. Moses was called to ascend the mountain to receive God's instructions, but the Lord strictly warned that the priests and the people must not approach, as this would violate the boundaries of God's holiness and could result in severe consequences. This event underscores the ancient Israelite understanding of God's unapproachable purity and the need for a mediator like Moses to bridge the gap between God and humanity.
