And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:
You must set up boundaries around the people, telling them, 'Be very careful not to go up on the mountain or even touch its edge. Anyone who touches the mountain will surely be put to death.'
God is telling Moses to create strict boundaries around Mount Sinai because God's holy presence there is so powerful that approaching it would be deadly for the people.
📚 Historical Context
In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had recently escaped slavery in Egypt and arrived at Mount Sinai, where God was preparing to establish His covenant with them through Moses. This event highlighted God's immense holiness, which was so powerful that direct contact with the mountain could result in death, emphasizing the need for boundaries to protect the people. Therefore, Moses was instructed to set physical limits around the mountain to prevent the Israelites from approaching and to maintain reverence for God's presence.
