📚 Historical Context

In the biblical narrative of Esther, set in the Persian Empire during the reign of King Ahasuerus (likely Xerxes I), the king had recently deposed his queen Vashti for refusing his command, leading to a search for a new queen. As part of this process, royal officials gathered beautiful young women from across the empire to the capital city of Susa, where they were placed under the care of Hegai, the king's eunuch responsible for the women's quarters. Esther, a young Jewish woman raised by her cousin Mordecai, was among those brought to the palace, highlighting how ordinary individuals could be drawn into pivotal historical events.
