This census took place near the end of Israel's 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, just before they entered the Promised Land. Moses was counting all the men aged 20 and older who were able to serve in the military. This was the second major census recorded in Numbers, with the first one taken at Mount Sinai nearly 40 years earlier.
