This occurs during Balaam's journey to curse the Israelites at King Balak's request. Balaam's donkey had been seeing and avoiding the angel all along, even speaking to rebuke Balaam, but Balaam was spiritually blind to what was happening. God finally allowed Balaam to see the divine messenger who had been protecting Israel by blocking his path.
