In the book of Judges, Gideon was a leader chosen by God to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites, who had been raiding their lands. After a stunning victory with a small army, Gideon was pursuing the Midianite kings, Zebah and Zalmunna, to complete his mission. When he asked the leaders of Succoth for bread to feed his weary troops, they refused out of fear and doubt, not wanting to risk aiding someone who might fail.
