Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus is speaking to his disciples during the Last Supper, just before his arrest and crucifixion, as part of his farewell discourse to prepare them for his departure. He emphasizes that his going away is not a loss but a necessary step for the Holy Spirit, referred to as the Comforter, to come and empower them in his absence. This occurs in the first-century Jewish context, where the promise of God's Spirit was anticipated but now being fulfilled in a new way through Jesus' mission.
