Balaam was a non-Israelite prophet who was hired by the Moabite king Balak to curse Israel, but God forced him to bless them instead (Numbers 22-24). Later, Balaam apparently advised Israel's enemies on how to lead the Israelites into sin through idol worship and immorality (Numbers 31:16). This verse records his death during Israel's conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua's leadership.
