This occurs during Joshua's conquest of Canaan when five Amorite kings had formed an alliance against Israel and the city of Gibeon. After God miraculously helped Israel defeat their armies (including making the sun stand still), these kings fled and hid in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua had ordered the cave sealed while the battle continued, and now he was ready to deal with these defeated rulers.
