And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
During the time of the prophet Jeremiah in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, the people of Judah were rebelling against God by worshiping idols and ignoring His laws, which led to moral and social decay in their society. God used Jeremiah to warn them that their unfaithfulness would result in judgment, including exile to a foreign land as punishment for their idolatry. This prophecy pointed to the impending Babylonian invasion and captivity around 586 BC, fulfilling God's covenant warnings from earlier scriptures like Deuteronomy.
