In the 7th century BC, the prophet Jeremiah was speaking to the people of Judah during a time of spiritual decline, warning them about their unfaithfulness to God through idolatry, which he compared to marital adultery. God had already judged the northern kingdom of Israel for their persistent sins by allowing them to be conquered and exiled by the Assyrians in 722 BC, essentially "divorcing" them as a symbol of broken covenant.
