Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.
During the prophet Jeremiah's ministry in the 6th century BC, the Northern Kingdom of Israel had already been conquered and exiled by the Assyrians in 722 BC, leaving its people scattered and spiritually unfaithful. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver a message of repentance to these wayward descendants, urging them to return despite their history of idolatry and rebellion. This verse highlights God's compassionate character, offering mercy and restoration rather than perpetual judgment.
