This was spoken during the final years before Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC, when Judah's spiritual leaders had abandoned their calling. The prophets were giving false messages instead of God's true words, while the priests were corrupt and failed to properly lead worship and teach God's law. These religious leaders were supposed to guide the people toward God, but instead they led them into sin.
