Jeremiah spoke these words during the final decades before Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC, when corruption and idolatry were rampant in Judah. The people were oppressing society's most vulnerable members while also worshiping foreign gods alongside the Lord. This was part of God's conditional promise - if they changed their ways, they could remain in the land He gave them.
