This prophecy was given during the final years of the kingdom of Judah (around 605-586 BC) when the Babylonian Empire was rising to power. Jeremiah was warning the people of Jerusalem that their persistent rebellion against God would result in military conquest and exile. The prediction came true when Nebuchadnezzar's armies conquered Jerusalem and deported many inhabitants to Babylon.
